Stephen Colbert has his Eyes on the Gold
This winter, the U.S. Speedskating team will have a very unusual logo on their suits, that of the Colbert Nation.
This past October, team’s original sponsor, DSB Bank, was forced to declare bankruptcy by a Dutch Court, according to a report on Bloomberg.com.
With competitions at the World Cup and the Winter Olympics quickly approaching and the loss of its financial backer for the past three years gone, the team was short $300,000.
On Nov. 2, Stephen Colbert announced two minutes into The Sport Report that the Colbert Nation would be sponsoring the the U.S. Speedskating team. Viewers could go onto colbertnation.com and donate money to help the team.
The next day, over $40,000 had been raised.
During the Olympics, the Speedskating team earns the U.S. more medals than any other winter sport. Without them, the United States’ medal count would suffer drastically.
Proving how competitive the game is, skater Joey Cheek appeared on the show to talk about some of the more underhanded behavior that goes on behind the scenes.
That weekend, the U.S. team competed with brand new logos on their uniforms.
On Monday, Nov. 9, six days after announcing the sponsorship, Colbert announced the current total, $200,200.
